Meeting
Hunting
After the Timberwolves opened the meeting, we fell in for the Hunting program,
which has presented by Jimmy Ritzman. He began by discussing apparel, which he
said was "just like winter camping, except only one day". The clothes he displayed
were mostly camouflage, except those that were bright orange. Orange must be
worn to legally hunt with a gun. He emphasized the importance of hats and boots
to wear.
He also mentioned several other necessities. First, a good knife, which "should
be sharp enough to cut hair"; rope, which you need to take the gun up into the
tree, and to drag the deer to your vehicle; and the 'pee bottle', which you relive
yourself into so the deer do not scent you. Deer have a good sense of smell.
He mentioned how, when you shoot a deer, the best place to hit it is on the shoulder
blade, because all the vital organs are back there. You can shoot does in the
head, but you don't want to on bucks, because it wrecks the trophy.
To get a hunting license, you must take a course, and then pass a test. Jimmy
quoted one question from the test, "What is a safety?" (on a gun) The answer
they wanted was, "A mechanical device that can and will fail".
